What Is Parasite SEO? How Does It Work?

Also referred to as Barnacle SEO or Piggyback SEO, Parasite SEO refers to the digital marketing services of using existing high-authority websites to boost the ranking of your own content in search engine results pages (SERPs). Instead of creating a website from scratch and trying to build its authority through organic means, parasite SEO involves creating content on established platforms that already have strong domain authority and high search engine visibility. In other form, you will be relying or parasitizing on the reputation and strength of reputable websites to improve the visibility of your own content. Here, digital marketers and content creators harness the power of third-party websites to drive traffic, commissions, and page rank for your brand.

Examples of platforms commonly used for parasite SEO include Medium, Quora, YouTube, and Reddit. However, it’s important to note that while parasite SEO can be effective in boosting search engine rankings, it’s also subject to the rules and algorithms of the hosting platforms, and overusing it or employing spammy tactics can lead to penalties or removal of content.

Parasite SEO Benefits

Parasite SEO: How It Works

Here’s how parasite SEO typically works:

  • Identify high-authority platforms: Parasite SEO involves finding platforms that already rank well in search engines, such as social media sites, video sharing platforms, forums, or high-traffic blogs. Platforms such as Medium, Quora, LinkedIn or Reddit carry significant weight in search engine algorithms due to their established domain authority and user engagement. Once identified, the next step is crafting compelling content tailored to these platforms.
  • Create and optimize content: Content creation involves thorough keyword research to target relevant topics or queries related to your business niche. By aligning your content with popular search queries, you increase the likelihood of visibility and engagement. Optimizing content involves strategically incorporating target keywords, meta descriptions, and other SEO elements within your content. By adhering to best practices in on-page optimization, you enhance the visibility and discoverability of your content in pages.
  • Link back to your site: Within the content you create on these platforms, you include links back to your own website or specific pages you want to rank higher in results. Within the content you publish on these platforms, strategically include links pointing back to relevant pages on your website. These backlinks serve as valuable signals to search engines, indicating the relevance and authority of your website in relation to the content topic.
  • Monitor and adjust: Monitor the performance of your content on these platforms and adjust your strategy as needed to maximize its impact on your website’s SEO.

By regularly tracking the performance metrics of your content on these platforms, such as search engine rankings, traffic, and user engagement, you can identify areas for improvement and refine your strategy accordingly. This approach allows you to adapt to changes in search algorithms, user behavior, and competitor activities, maximizing the impact of your parasite SEO efforts on your website’s overall SEO performance.

  • Guest posting: Guest posting is where individuals or businesses contribute content to external websites or blogs in exchange for a byline or author bio that includes a link back to their own website. By guest posting on high-authority websites relevant to their niche or industry, content creators can leverage the existing domain authority and audience of these platforms to enhance their own website’s SEO. Additionally, it also allows for the dissemination of valuable content to a broader audience, increasing brand visibility and credibility.
  • Article submission: Article submission involves creating and distributing articles on high-authority platforms to improve search engine visibility and drive traffic to your own website. By leveraging established platforms such as Medium, Quora, or LinkedIn Pulse, you can tap into their existing domain authority and user base to increase the reach of your content. Article submission allows you to target specific keywords or topics relevant to your business or industry, optimizing your content for search engines while providing valuable information or insights to readers. Additionally, including links back to your website within these articles can generate referral traffic and enhance your site’s backlink profile, which is crucial for improving search engine rankings.
  • Social media profile optimization: In parasite SEO, optimizing social media profiles plays a crucial role in leveraging the authority and visibility of established platforms to enhance one’s own online presence. By precisely crafting social media profiles with relevant keywords, compelling descriptions, and high-quality imagery, individuals and businesses can effectively attract organic traffic and improve search engine rankings.

Quora
You research and find that Quora is ranking well for your keyword “natural skincare tips.” Quora is a question-and-answer platform with a high domain authority and often ranks well in search engines.
YouTube

Medium

Reddit
Reddit is a social news aggregation, web content rating, and discussion website. It consists of various communities (subreddits) where users can share content and engage with others. Posts on Reddit can rank well, particularly within niche subreddits.
LinkedIn
LinkedIn is a professional networking platform where users can connect with colleagues, share content, and engage with industry discussions. Articles published here often have good visibility in results, making it suitable for parasite SEO targeting professional topics.
WordPress
WordPress.com is a hosted version of the popular WordPress blogging platform. Users can create blogs and publish content here, which can rank well in search engine results due to WordPress’s strong reputation and SEO capabilities.

Challenges with Barnacle SEO

While parasite SEO offers several benefits, it also comes with its own set of challenges. One primary challenge is the risk of dependence on third-party platforms, as algorithm changes or policy updates can suddenly impact the visibility or accessibility of content. Additionally, maintaining consistency and relevance across multiple platforms can be time-consuming and resource-intensive, requiring ongoing monitoring and optimization efforts.

Also, competition on popular platforms may be severe, making it difficult to stand out amidst a sea of content creators vying for attention. Another challenge lies in balancing the need for optimization with providing valuable and engaging content to users, as overly promotional or spammy tactics can backfire and lead to penalties or removal of content. A leading SEO outsourcing company can help businesses with effective parasite SEO strategies that can help them achieve better rankings.

Why Is Index Bloat Bad? Tips to Deal with It

Why Is Index Bloat Bad? Tips to Deal with It

Does your website’s search engine index contain an excessive number of pages, which is mainly of no value to users? This is what is referred to as index bloat. It refers to a situation where Google crawlers index excessively low-quality or irrelevant pages on a website, i.e. pages that you don’t want appearing in search results.

When a Google bot scans and indexes a particular website, its goal is to offer users the finest and most pertinent content. However, SEO problems related to index bloat can diminish a website’s authority and its ranking in search engine results in terms of relevance.Outsourcing digital marketing tasks to an experienced search engine optimization company can help with efficient indexing and ranking by the search engine algorithms.

What Causes Index Bloat?

Index bloat occurs when search engines index pages that don’t add value to users, such as filtered product pages with URL parameters, internal search results, printer-friendly versions, thank you pages, test URLs, and thin content. Common culprits include filter combinations, disorderly archives, unrestrained tags, pagination, unruly parameters, expired content, non-optimized search results, auto-generated profiles, tracking URLs, inconsistent HTTP/HTTPS and www usage, and subdirectories that shouldn’t be indexed.

Index bloat can occur for various reasons:

  • Frequent updates and deletes: If there are frequent updates or deletions of records in a table, the index may become fragmented, leading to unused or partially filled index pages.
  • Inserting duplicate or redundant data: Inserting duplicate or redundant data into a table can cause the index to grow unnecessarily. This can happen when data is not normalized, or when there is poor data quality.
  • Unused indexes: Indexes that are created but not used by queries contribute to index bloat. These unused indexes consume storage space without providing any performance benefits.
  • Inefficient index design: Poorly designed indexes, such as having too many or too few indexes for a particular table, can contribute to index bloat.

Any website can suffer from index bloat caused by pagination issues, by having both secure and non-secure versions of your website indexed, and by allowing WordPress blog categories, tags, archives, etc. to be indexed by Google and other search engines.

Does Index Bloat Hurt Your SEO?

Yes, index bloat can have negative implications for your SEO (Search Engine Optimization). Even if it doesn’t harm the search rankings of your website’s desirable pages, it will cannibalize your site’s organic search traffic. Once indexed, the undesirable pages will essentially steal the organic search traffic of your website’s desirable pages.

Adverse Effects of Index Bloat

Search engine bots have limited resources and time to crawl and index web pages. Index bloat can force search engines to spend resources on irrelevant or low-quality pages, slowing down the crawl process and potentially causing important pages to be crawled less frequently.

Diagnosing the Issue

To diagnose index bloat, you need to measure your indexation rate by cross referencing the pages you wish to be indexed against those that Google actually is indexing. Here’s what you need to do through your analysis. If you have good quality content, its indexability must be maintained. Pages with low quality content must be removed from the index through a no index meta tag. The advantage of this analysis is that you can also find good pages you missed when your XML sitemap was created. These can be added to the sitemap to ensure better indexing.

The ideal indexation rate is 100%, where only all the quality pages in your site are indexed, without any unwanted stuff being considered. The pages that are the source for any index bloat to happen usually involve unintentional internally duplicated content, pagination, pages with thin content, and content that under performs.

You can check out your property at the Google Search Console (GSC). Head to the Index Coverage Status report. In the report you’ll find Google showing how many URLs in total it has found in your site.

Here’s an example of the data:

Diagnosing the Issue Coverage

Note down the findings, the number of pages that Google says it is indexing.

You can then do a site:domain.com search on Google and then check out the number of results Google serves from its index. Compare the number with the number you found from your other checks such as the GSC report. Any differences you find are an indication of inefficient indexation. The Google Webmaster guidelines can help you understand the quality criteria Google follows for page indexing. When you compare numeric values from various sources, you can find site pages that have low value.

Pages That Don’t Need to Be Indexed

The major index bloat issue, that is, pages that don’t need to be indexed and which you need to look out for include test pages, thank you pages, custom post types, testimonial pages, author pages, blog tag & blog category pages among others. WordPress sites can use plug-ins such as All in One SEO or Yoast SEO to track such page types.

Figuring out if your XML sitemap has pages that shouldn’t be indexed depends on the kind of site you have and the purpose of those pages. Are they really essential for your site? Are there duplicate pages elsewhere? The examples stated above are usually the kind of pages that need to be avoided.

Google’s indexation can sometimes get extremely tricky. SEOs have experienced that. So, some tweaking and analysis are essential here. That’s because indexing and crawling can sometimes be two different things. Google needn’t necessarily index all the stuff it crawls or show all it has indexed. That’s one of the reasons behind the unpredictability of search results.

How Do You Fix Index Bloating?

  • Deleting Pages for Higher Search Rankings

Does the concept of deleting pages to perform better in search rankings ring a bell? It seems as revolutionary a concept as some of the others out there, conceived just to grab attention. But while – on the face of it – the concept seems strange, there is some real reasoning behind it, in the context of index bloat. If your website has a number of outdated pages you no longer use, you can delete them and benefit from fewer thin content pages, fewer redirects and 404s, and lesser chance for error and misinterpretation from search engines. By limiting the options given to search engines, you can reduce the control you give them and gain more control on your site and your search engine optimization efforts.

  • Canonical Tag

A canonical tag refers to a special code that can enable the search engine bots to distinguish between a page’s preferred version and a very similar-looking page. When you place a canonical tag in your site’s header, you indicate to the bot that it should only index the preferred page version.

You need to place the tag on the version of the page that is not preferred. It should contain a link to the preferred version. Here’s the format:
Canonical Tag

Canonical tags only have to do with the crawling and indexing aspects of the search bot, and do not affect user interactions while they’re browsing your site. Here are 2 examples:

Canonical Tag Examples

  • Redirects

Redirects are another option, in cases where the index for a site gets bloated because of old pages that resolve as 404 error pages while clicking on a link. If a site has changed the folder structure for these pages, the old and the new URLs could currently be indexed. The solution here is to redirect visitors to the new page from the old one, so that their user experience is uncompromised.

  • Pagination

Let’s look at pagination. Pagination basically refers to a kind of duplicate content occurring due to long content which spills to more than page 1. It could also be a product list that spreads to more than a page. That would mostly have duplicate Meta descriptions and title tags. To deal with that, you need to state the relationship between those consecutive pages having similar content. This can be done by adding a special code to the pages that are connected, rel=”””” or rel=”prev”. This will help the search bot to recognize that these pages are related.
Pagination

  • URL Removal Tool

You can use the URL Removal Tool in Google Search Console to get rid of unwanted pages. This tool allows you to request Google to remove specific URLs from its index. These requests are typically processed within the same day they are requested. However, this is only a temporary solution because if you don’t take measures such as those mentioned above to prevent unwanted pages from being indexed again in the future, they will return to Google’s index when the search engine crawls your website in the future.

Index Bloat Prevention Tips

  • Plan website structure carefully to avoid unnecessary pages
  • Regularly review and update content
  • Monitor indexed pages in search console
  • Use clear and consistent URL structures
  • Use the ‘noindex’ meta tag for unused pages
  • Optimize pagination with rel=”prev” and rel=”next” tags
  • Avoid diluting page authority with high-quality content
  • Properly handle HTTP to HTTPS transitions

Implementing these tips will contribute to a cleaner and more efficient website, reducing the risk of index bloat and enhancing your SEO efforts. With professional digital marketing services, businesses can get the index bloat issue dealt with and ensure their website performs well in search rankings, delivering good ROI.

Faceted Navigation – Best and Worst Practices

Faceted Navigation – Best and Worst Practices

A UX technique known as faceted navigation, or faceted search, enables users to apply multiple facets (filters) to refine the internal search results. Users can locate what they need considerably more quickly and easily in this way. Social media marketing services can optimize faceted filters for a smooth user experience. E-commerce websites use faceted navigation mainly to reduce bounce rates and increase product discoverability. That also holds true for any other content-rich website, like those that list businesses, travel and reservation websites, stock photo websites, and job posting websites.

Examples of Faceted Navigation Sites
Ecommerce websites

Facets that you may come across on eCommerce sites, for example, may include:

  • Size
  • Color
  • Brand
  • Price range
  • Style

Library sites

Libraries and research databases often use faceted navigation to help users quickly find the articles or research they need.

In addition to general keyword searches, JSTOR users can further refine their searches with filters for multiple criteria, including:

  • Content type (article, review, book, research report, etc.)
  • Publication date range
  • Language
  • Journal topics
  • Specific journal titles
  • Access type

Real estate listings websites

Faceted navigation is also commonly used by listings-focused websites, such as job listings directories, real estate, and travel and hospitality websites. Using their faceted search system, users can find properties that meet their preferences for

  • features
  • cost
  • location
  • availability for reservations
  • kind of property

Stock photos

Sites that provide stock photos and digital assets, such as iStock, Alamy, Unsplash, Kaboompics, and Pixabay, feature faceted navigation that makes it simple to browse through millions of photos and provide searchers with relevant and targeted results.

The stock photo markets use different filters. The following characteristics allow users to narrow down their search queries:

  • Image orientation
  • Picture size
  • The number of people shown in the image
  • The ages of the people in the photo
  • The release date

Faceted Navigation Best and Worst Practices

Faceted Navigation Best Practices

Clear and Intuitive Design

Make sure the faceted navigation is easily navigable and conspicuously displayed. Use easy-to-understand icons and labels for your filtering choices.Clear and concise labels ensure users understand their purpose.Design an intuitive interface that guides users on how to apply filters easily without confusion.

Prioritize Important Filters

Organize the filters so that the most crucial and frequently used filters are at the top or in a visible spot. Permit users to rearrange the filters in any order they choose.Implement a logical hierarchy of filters to avoid overwhelming users with choices.

Responsive Design

Make sure the faceted navigation is responsive and functions well across a range of devices, such as tablets and smartphones.Ensure quick loading times for filtered results to maintain user engagement and satisfaction.

Give Precise Feedback

Inform users in a straightforward manner when a filter is applied and display the number of results that match their selection. This will allow users to easily modify or remove the filters.

Provide Range Expanders for Numerical Measurements

Provide range sliders for numerical filters (price, size, etc.) so that users can quickly choose a desired range.

Smart Combination or Nest Filters

Carefully combine related filters so as not to overwhelm users with too many choices. Organizing related options can be facilitated by nesting filters.

Keep User Preferences in Mind

Provide user selections that are remembered by persistent filters, even when switching between pages or sessions.

Performance Enhancement

To ensure quick and seamless filtering, optimize the performance of faceted navigation, particularly when working with large datasets.

Give Explicit Reset Choices

Incorporate a feature that allows users to quickly begin a new search by clearing all filters with a single click.

Worst Practices of Faceted Navigation

  • Identical content
  • When there are numerous faceted pages that are overly similar to the parent page, content duplication may become a problem. These pages are treated as distinct URLs and are indexable, so using URL parameters or static URLs could cause serious issues. This frequently results in the same content being available at several URLs.

  • Crawl Budget waste
  • Using faceted navigation generates a ton of new URLs. The index gets “bloated” by it, and could lead to crawl budget waste. Inappropriate handling of faceted navigation can cause the crawler to spend all of its crawl budget on pointless faceted pages rather than the truly crucial ones.

  • PageRank Dilution
  • Your PageRank will be split among all faceted pages if you manage faceted navigation improperly. This causes your PageRank to be distributed among several pointless faceted pages rather than increasing the authority of the most significant pages, such as major categories. It doesn’t really aid in ranking in this instance.

Want to streamline your user interface?

Call us @ 800-941-5527

  • Missed Organic Search Traffic
  • You might lose out on some ranking opportunities if you carelessly block every faceted URL. Specifically, it’s possible that you won’t rank highly, target some excellent long-tail keywords, or receive a sizable amount of organic traffic.

  • Overuse of Filters
  • Don’t give users too many filter options to choose from. Concentrate on the most pertinent and widely used filters.

  • Discrepant Terminology
  • To prevent confusion, name filters according to standard conventions and use consistent terminology.

  • Hidden Filters
  • Important filters and options shouldn’t be hidden behind menus or buttons as this can make using them frustrating.

  • Absence of Reaction
  • Users may become confused and have a less than ideal experience if there is unclear feedback regarding the filters they have applied.

  • Slow Operation
  • Users may become irritated if the faceted navigation is sluggish or responds slowly. Make sure the navigation is quick and smooth.

  • Incomprehensible User Interface
  • Confusion can result from a user interface that is poorly designed or difficult to use. To make sure the design is user-friendly, test it on actual users.

  • Uncertain Reset Choices
