Google Updates Link Visibility in AI-Powered Search

by | Published on Feb 24, 2026 | News

Google is rolling out a major UI refresh to its search experience, specifically aimed at improving link visibility in AI-powered search results. The update redesigns how source citations appear within AI Overviews and AI Mode by adding hover popup windows on desktop. This update addresses long-standing concerns from publishers regarding website traffic and zero-click searches.

New UI Features in AI-driven Search for Better Source Visibility

  • Hover Previews: On desktop, users can now hover over source links to see a pop-up card featuring the article headline, website names, a brief description, and favicons—similar to social media link previews.
  • Prominent Mobile Icons: Link icons on mobile have been redesigned to be more descriptive and prominent, ensuring they stand out within the AI-generated text.
  • User Engagement: Google reports that internal testing shows “this new UI is more engaging, making it easier to get to great content across the web.”

Why It Matters

The visibility of links within AI-generated responses is one of the most significant issues in search today. Pew reports that users click a link within an AI summary in only 1% of visits. Additionally, analysis from GrowthSRC Media indicates that top organic click-through rates fell from 28% to 19% after the expansion of AI Overviews, representing a 32% drop in traffic for top results.

Google is making these iterative changes to address these shifts in user behavior. By adding hover pop-ups and more descriptive mobile icons, the company is attempting to integrate source citations more naturally into the AI experience. While Google reports that this new design is more engaging, the long-term impact on website traffic remains to be seen. For brands looking to adapt their strategies to these frequent changes, outsourcing digital marketing services can provide the specialized expertise needed to maintain visibility.
