Google I/O 2025: Major Updates of AI-powered Search

by | Published on May 23, 2025 | AI, SEO

At its annual I/O developer keynote event, Google announced significant shifts in the way users interact with search daily. The tech company has advanced AI-powered search by introducing AI Overviews and AI Mode to a broader audience, along with new integrated features. By providing more intuitive, conversational capabilities to discover information, this transformation marks a departure from traditional search methodologies. As businesses adapt to these advancements, partnering with agencies outsourcing digital marketing services can provide them with the expertise to navigate these changes effectively.

How Does Google AI Mode Work in Search?

Google AI Mode is an AI-powered functionality that allows users to receive detailed, contextual responses to users’ questions. Although launched earlier this March, this tool was accessible to users only via Search Labs. Users in the U.S no longer need to sign in as a new tab for AI mode is available directly in the site and Google search apps. Using a technique Google refers to as “query fan-out”, this advanced model breaks down a user’s question into subtopics and issues multiple queries simultaneously.

With the integration of Google’s Gemini 2.5 model, users can now ask layered, complex search queries and receive coherent, synthesized responses. Unlike traditional results that provide a list of blue links, AI Mode parses the intent behind a search and provides intelligent, personalized answers drawn from multiple sources. This reduces the need for users to sift through multiple pages to find the information they require. Driven by multimodality and advanced reasoning, users can go deeper with follow-up questions asked within the same interface.

This mode is designed to offer:

  • Customized visualizations: It goes beyond simple fact retrieval, by analyzing complex datasets to deliver customized visual answers such as charts and graphs for sports and finance queries.
  • Conversational interactions: Users can ask follow-up questions to refine results or explore related subjects.
  • Deeper insights: It is powered by Google’s latest intelligent model Gemini 2.5, capable of handling advanced thinking and reasoning, including parallel thinking techniques.

Practical Applications of AI Mode in Daily Life

Here are some new features of AI Mode that provide real-life support to users:

  • Project Mariner’s agentic capabilities allow the AI to perform tasks on the user’s behalf such as booking tickets or filling out forms, reducing manual effort.
  • Deep Search delivers expert-level, fully-cited presentations by issuing hundreds of searches and reasoning across disparate information, enhancing research capabilities.
  • Project Astra’s live capabilities are integrated into Search Live which enables smartphone cameras to recognize objects, landmarks, or products instantly, integrating real-world inputs into the search process.
  • Personalized search features draw from a user’s data within Google’s ecosystem, such as Gmail and Calendar, to offer customized answers and suggestions when permitted.

These additions expand the capabilities of Google as a simple fact-finding machine to more practical assistance.

Global Rollout of AI Overview

At the I/O 2025 summit, Google revealed that it expanded AI Overviews to users in over 200 countries and territories and in more than 40 languages. This broad availability reflects the company’s goal to make AI-enhanced search accessible to a diverse global audience. Liz Reid, VP head of Google Search, stated that AI Overviews delivers the fastest AI responses in the industry.

According to Google, the use of AI Overviews in its biggest markets such as the U.S and India leads to a 10% growth in the type of queries that display AI Overviews. This increase is measured through a comparison of users who have been shown AI Overviews versus those who have not. In addition to expanding availability, Google has also upgraded the model that powers AI Overviews to Gemini 2.5. This version enables Google to answer even more challenging questions across a range of topics.

Implications for Content Creators and Businesses

The roll out of Google AI Mode changes how users’ access and consume online content. With AI-generated answers presented directly in the search interface, fewer users may click through to external websites. This may present a challenge for content creators and businesses that rely on web traffic for visibility. To stay competitive, companies can partner with affordable digital marketing services to optimize their website and maintain engagement.

Google asserts that searchers who interact with the AI-assisted queries tend to spend more time on sites, resulting in higher quality users. However, sites that once relied heavily on keyword matching or organic rankings may see diminished direct traffic as answers are summarized before a user ever clicks through. Businesses must now consider how their content contributes to an AI’s synthesis of information rather than how it ranks on a results page.

To maintain relevance, content must be clear, accurate, and well-structured, allowing AI systems to extract authoritative information. Content creators need to optimize for AI comprehension alongside traditional search engine ranking strategies. Businesses should also focus on providing accurate product information, using structured data, and keeping content up to date to ensure it is effectively incorporated into AI-driven responses.
